Case study

Offshore stainless steel fans for windmill park

Background

Our customer has extensive experience with HVAC systems for the offshore industry; an industry often dealing with extreme weather, tropical environments with high temperatures and humidity levels to extremely cold conditions with very low temperatures. In this case, it was a project in the North Sea. The fans that we supplied were used to cool the transformer rooms and ventilate the other rooms.

Challenge

At Slingerland, we work with our customer to develop tailor-made solutions for any type of vessel, construction or facility. We have extensive experience on board almost all types of ships. We are not afraid to think outside the box and include customer specifications in custom offshore fans, no matter how demanding.

Solution

In this case, a combination of free-running centrifugal fans and axial fans with both short and long housings was chosen. A number of models are made in ATEX.

Our axial fans were constructed from materials suitable for an offshore application. Housing for the fan and the motor foundation are made of stainless steel 316, pickled and passivated. The very solid and efficient plastic impeller is equipped with an anodized aluminum hub which is then provided with a maritime coating. Operating points for these fans vary from 70 m³/h, 150 pascals to 41,000 m³/h, 500 pascals. Diameters range from ø310mm to ø1000mm.

The fans with the size ø1000mm are intended for the main transformer room, they are provided with special reinforcements for horizontal installation on vibration dampers. All flange connections are customer-specifically produced according ISO15138, for easy connection to the ductwork. Fans are provided with stainless steel 316 mesh grille, mounting material in stainless steel 316, motor support thickness of 6mm, fan housing thickness of 4mm. Suitable for temperatures from -15°C to +50°C. The fans are equipped with motors varying between 0.12kW-4p and 15kW-4p in marine version with a special C5/CX coating system, stainless steel 316 shaft, space heaters, stainless steel 316 mounting materials, adapted terminal box, PTC sensors, and executed according to DNV-GL with mention on stainless steel type plate.

Free-running centrifugal fans

Our free-running centrifugal fans were completely made of stainless steel 316, both the impeller and the motor base frame. The entire construction is afterwards shot blasted. Furthermore, the suction cone is provided with a measuring point. The fans are suitable for operating temperatures from -10°C to +45°C. The operating point in this case is 10,000 m³/h, 1434 pascals. Fans have a flexible connection with stainless steel 316 flanges. Furthermore, the fans are equipped with a 7.5kW motor in marine version with a special C5/CX coating, stainless steel 316 shaft, space heaters, stainless steel 316 mounting materials, adapted terminal box, PTC sensors, and executed in accordance with DNV-GL with indication on stainless steel name plate.
