Axial fans for freezing tunnel in Mexico

With no less than 96 large axial fans, we recently contributed to the construction of a pig slaughterhouse in Mexico. More specifically, it involved a freezing tunnel where carcasses would be stored. Our customer was looking for a bespoke solution for their construction and found it in the axial industrial fans by Slingerland. Read all about it below.

Axial fans for the slaughterhouse industry

Our axial fans recently proved to be the ideal solution for an important project. Our client, one of the world’s largest systems suppliers for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industry won a project in Mexico. The project? Build a large pig slaughterhouse including axial fans for a  freezing tunnel to freeze carcasses.

The challenge was to find large axial fans that could be wall mounted. After all, they would pull the air over a cooler block and blow it into the freezing tunnel with no less than 96 fans.

Axial fan casings assembled in our own workshop

Eventually, we found the perfect solution for this client which we completely assembled in-house. A metalworking company specialised in the flange rolling of casings up to 2400 mm in diameter produced axial fan casings on our specific request.

Composition of the axial fans in question

These axial fan casings had a thickness of 4 mm, an internal diameter of 800 mm and a length of 300 mm. The motor mount was entirely welded onto the casing and had a thickness of 6 mm. Everything consisted of standard steel that was hot-dip galvanised afterwards.

The fan casing was fitted with an inlet cone on one side and a flat flange on the other. Since all fixing materials were also hot-dip galvanised, the axial industrial fans were suitable for temperatures between -30°C and + 40°C.

The impeller of the axial fan was made of 3 profiled impeller blades of PAG and fully balanced according to G6.3. The impeller hub consisted of untreated cast aluminium and was fitted with a shaft hole of Ø28H7.

The motor of these hot-dip galvanised axial fans was a custom design as well. These axial industrial fans were fitted with a four-pole 4.5 kW motor of the brand WEG. This was a 3x460V 60Hz motor fitted with a B3 terminal box IP55 and insulation class F bearings.

The motor of these axial fans featured idle heating, PTC sensors for each phase and was resistant to the aforementioned operating temperatures. Finally, it boasted a Labyrinth Taconite shaft seal (for a temperature of -30°C), with Aeroshell 22/Mobil Polyrex EM low-temperature grease.
