What are industrial fans - Everything you need to know about them

Industrial Fans

In our information article on ventilation, we already told you more about the importance of ventilation, the different ventilation systems and ventilation in the industry. Haven’t you read that yet? Then click here. In this article we go deeper into the materials that enable ventilation in your rooms: ventilators, and specifically: what are industrial fans.

A fan is a rotating machine with a rotating part that makes air or a gas move. A fan is used, for example, to supply a room with fresh air or to extract polluted air. Usually the impeller of a fan is driven by an electric motor.

Parts of a ventilator

  • Snail shell / enclosure
  • The wheel / roto blade
  • The chair
  • The inlet cone
  • The motor

The suction side is the side where the pure air is sucked in. Then the air moves through the housing to the outlet side of the fan.

What types of fans exist?

Fans can be divided into axial fans and radial fans. With an axial fan, the air flow is moved parallel to the axis. With a radial fan, the air flows in parallel to the axis, but leaves the fan transversely (radially) in the longitudinal direction. Which type of fan you need depends on the area of application.

1. Axial Fan

Axial fans can move a large amount of air with little electrical power compared to centrifugal fans. Since these fans cannot achieve high pressure, they are best used with low pressure systems. Additional disadvantages are the turbulence and a high noise level. Depending on the arrangement of the construction, there are different types of axial fans. Examples are wall and ring fans.

2. Radial Fan

Centrifugal (or radial) fans move smaller air volumes, but can build up greater pressure. That is why they are best used with high pressure systems. In addition, centrifugal fans use little energy. They are extremely suitable to move air in underpressure and/or overpressure systems and ensure a stable air movement in a duct. Nevertheless, keep in mind that centrifugal fans are usually large in size and heavy in weight.

Other types

Dakventilator

Roof fan

A roof fan is placed in the roof and ensures that the ventilation is good so that polluted air does not get stuck. A roof fan falls under the mechanical ventilation. Read more about the roof fans of Slingerland Techniek by clicking on the title.

Buisventilator

Tube fan

A tube fan (or duct fan) is installed between two ventilation pipes and is often used in situations where more air resistance needs to be bridged than with an axial fan. Read more about the tube fans of Slingerland Techniek by clicking on the title.

Boxventilator

Box fan

Box fans can be compared to radial fans. The difference is that box fans have no cochlea. Box fans have a similar effect to tubular fans, but with a radial fan on the inside. Read more about the box fans of Slingerland Techniek by clicking on the title.

Tailor-made advice

An investment in a quality fan for utility or industrial purposes can solve and prevent a lot of inconvenience. When purchasing, it is important that you pay close attention to what type of fan you use where. We hope the above information has already taken you in the right direction. However, if you want to be assured of a good fan choice we advise you to contact us. We will take the time to discuss the different options with you. You can contact us here or on our contact page below.

What are ATEX fans?

ATEX Fans

ATEX originates from the French term ATmosphère EXplosives and is used as a term for two European directives in the field of explosion hazards under atmospheric conditions. When an area is classified according to ATEX it means that there is a risk of ignition between flammable gas, dust, powder, or evaporation gases of liquids and the air where explosions can occur.

ATEX fans are fans that are used in areas where there is a risk of explosion. All ATEX fans of Slingerland Techniek are executed according to the latest ATEX guidelines. This means that our fans are equipped with an ATEX motor, non-sparking version, shaft seal, ATEX certification including ATEX plate. Be sure to have a look at our product range

ATEX Guidelines

From the summer of 2003, all organizations in the EU where there is a risk of explosion must be subject to Directive 2014/34/EU and Directive 1999/92/EU. Commonly known as ATEX 114 and ATEX 153. This particularly affects manufacturers of explosion sensitive equipment and protective systems.

ATEX 114 is used for the manufacture of installations and products and ATEX 153 is applied to the environment, procedures and instructions of employees. These guidelines must guarantee the safety and health of employees in areas with a risk of explosion.

ATEX Zone

Before measures can be taken to avoid ignition sources, the hazardous areas must be divided into zones according to the duration and frequency of the substances or gases. Zones 0, 1 and 2 refer to the hazardous gases present in an area. Zones 20, 21 and 22 in turn relate to the harmful substances present.

Why is ventilation indispensable?

Ventilation

Ventilation is the replacement of one part of air with another part. Usually polluted air is replaced by clean air. Ventilation should lead to an increase and improvement in the purity of air. In this article you will find out the most important reasons to ventilate.

Why is ventilation important?

A healthy living and working environment are essential for optimal work performance. Good ventilation is therefore indispensable. Spaces that are poorly ventilated can cause several health complaints. For example, coughing, colds, headaches, fatigue, … In addition, there is a risk of mould. It is therefore important to pay timely attention to your ventilation.
“Even when there are no people or activities taking place in an indoor climate, moisture is created daily that pollutes the air”.

It comes as no surprise that the activities that people carry out in an indoor climate lead to air pollution. You can think of simply moving and breathing people, but also cooking, heating and smoking lead to polluted air. In industry, this is of course once so much the case for production halls, for example. But even when there are no people or activities taking place in an indoor climate, moisture is created daily that pollutes the air. Ventilation will ensure that this polluted air is replaced by fresh air.

3 reasons why ventilation is indispensable

1. Improved air quality

It is well known that people benefit from breathing in fresh air. Exhaled air should therefore be expelled as soon as possible so that fresh air can be inhaled again. If your indoor climate is insufficiently ventilated, there will not be enough fresh air circulating around. This has a direct effect on air quality and therefore on people’s health.

2. Increased productivity

Poor air quality can cause various health complaints such as fatigue and headaches. A lack of fresh air can also lead to loss of concentration. Do you want to increase the productivity of your people? Or simply improve the mood of your loved ones? Perhaps better ventilation is the solution.

3. Necessary moisture extraction

In the introduction of this article we already briefly discussed the fact that poor ventilation can lead to mold formation. Besides the fact that mold is difficult to remove, it is also very bad for your health. These fungi arise because the released moisture can’t go anywhere. The moisture will then condense on windows, walls and ceilings. Prevent that released moisture leads to mold formation by making your ventilation in good time.

Types of mechanical ventilation systems

Mechanical fans can be carried out in different ways. It is possible to let the supply and exhaust of air take place completely mechanically, but there are also ventilation systems in which this can be done partially. There are three different types of mechanical ventilation systems:

Mechanical ventilation systems

What ventilation system is best suited for your indoor climate depends on a number of factors such as the type and size of the indoor climate.

Ventilation in the industry

Slingerland Fans is specialised in the development of industrial fans. Ventilation in industry is very different from home ventilation. There are many different buildings that have different functions. These buildings have different ventilation requirements.

  • Office spaces: Importance of employee comfort. To achieve this, fresh air distribution, proper temperature control and CO2 removal are considered.
  • Factory halls: Importance of the efficient removal of dust and toxic gases.
  • Data centers: Importance of protecting the installations against overheating.

Slingerland Fans understands that it is difficult for companies to indicate exactly what they are looking for. Often we are contacted with a problem and it is expected that the solution has to do with fans. In order to provide companies with the best possible service, we look at the business situation together. This means that we like to come and have a look on location. Subsequently, the possible solutions are discussed so that we can solve your business problem in full consultation.
