Roof fans for hazardous substance warehouse

Slingerland’s mechanical roof fans are versatile. Do you want to provide optimal ventilation and efficiently drain polluting substances at your office, commercial or industrial building? Read all about how we helped a customer with a newly constructed warehouse with our high-quality roof ventilation.

High-quality roof ventilation to prevent calamities

We supplied these roof ventilators to a logistic service provider with a newly constructed warehouse for storage and transshipment of hazardous materials. As an installer, they specialised in detecting small concentrations of hazardous materials and also supplied ventilation. They had taken good care of the company’s air management for years and their search for better ventilation led them to Slingerland. The intention was to prevent calamities resulting from the concentration of these high-risk substances.

No less than 84 industrial roof fans

For the aforementioned reason, the logistic centre was divided into 42 compartments. Self-evidently, they needed 42 fans for optimal air supply and another 42 fans for air extraction. A total of no less than 84 mechanical roof ventilators! It was a challenge to compose an affordable solution with both supply and extraction roof ventilators. Since most standard roof fans are used for air extraction, Slingerland designed a model for fan supply.

Mechanical axial roof fans for both air supply and extraction.

In collaboration with the customer, we created a custom roof ventilator for this specific application. We deliberately went with an axial fan fitted with a plastic canopy. The bottom plate had an inlet cone and axial casing of (fully) galvanised steel. These industrial roof fans had a diameter of 630 mm and an air displacement capacity of no less than 20,000 m3/h each.

Are roof fans the ideal solution for the air quality at your company?

Built-in centrifugal fan

Dust nuisance is a common problem in industry. In recent years, air quality has been the subject of more and more discussion. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, a great deal of attention has been paid to particulate matter. In addition, we also hear a lot of noise about CO2 in the ambient air due to environmental issues. However, dust problems have been occurring in production environments for much longer.

Because of the increasing awareness and extra attention for dust problems, more and more filter builders have emerged in Europe. Because almost all filter builders innovate and want to build as compact as possible, Slingerland Techniek has come up with a solution for a horizontal version that can be mounted directly in the clean air space of the filter cabinet.

We already provide the fans with a discharge valve with bearing and counterweight. The underframe has been specially developed for easy mounting that is separate from the fan. This is a conscious choice so that first the frame can be easily mounted without the fan getting in the way when mounting. Then the fan can easily be lowered down to the frame. The inlet is completely airtight, making it the only thing that needs to be fitted.

What is the advantage of a built-in centrifugal fan?

Built-in fans cause significantly less noise nuisance than a separate fan installed next to a filter because the casing of the filter already absorbs a fair amount of noise. If the filter builder provides insulation on top of that on the inside of the filter box, you have a very low-noise system.

How do built-in fans work?

In most cases, multiple fans are placed in a filter so that they can be controlled in Cascade. This means that when the installation requires more power, a fan is added. As soon as more suction capacity is needed in the pipes this will be noticed by a pressure sensor. The pressure sensor will then send a signal to the electrical cabinet to switch on an extra fan. In this way a customer can optimally save energy and the installation is easy to assemble. This way, the filter is delivered to the customer ready to use, which simplifies the installation one by one.

What should you pay attention to when choosing built-in centrifugal fans?

You must ensure that each fan has a non-return valve on the outlet. It is important that no air can escape through the fans that are not rotating. This means that when a fan is switched off, the valve on the outlet must close. Slingerland Techniek has come up with some very nice standard solutions for this.

Plastic fan - CO2 dosing system

Background

A customer in greenhouse horticulture guarantees products with a long lifespan and high reliability. That is why it was their job to find a high-quality solution for the correct dosing of CO2 in the greenhouses. The ventilation systems they supply must be reliable, robust and solid.

Challenge

We had to come up with a concept that is high-quality, interesting from a price point of view, but can also guarantee a long lifetime. Of course, this combination of product requirements is not always easy to combine in a product. The desired fan had to be suitable for bringing CO2 from flue gases from a combustion boiler or CHP installation into a cultivation area. So that the growth of plants is promoted.

Solution through our plastic fan

We have developed a fan for this customer, partly made of plastic and stainless steel. The fan is built on a high-quality stainless steel frame, which consists of a motor support and rear plate to mount the stainless steel impeller on. Then the plastic welded house is built around it. A stainless steel impeller was chosen because sometimes temperatures up to 60 degrees can be reached. Stainless steel is better suited in this application to ensure that there is no imbalance in the impeller.

Acoustic booth fans

Background

The importance of maintaining clean indoor air cannot be overstated. Polluted air can cause a range of health problems, including respiratory issues and allergies, and it can also negatively impact the performance of industrial equipment. That’s why a leading supplier of products, systems, and services for extraction and filtration of indoor air pollution understands the need for a suitable fan to complement their high-quality solutions

Challenge

Different facilities have varying requirements for the amount of air that needs to be extracted, which can depend on the nature of the production process, the type of equipment being used, and the number of employees working in the facility.

This posed a significant challenge for the us, because we recognised the need for a system that could cater to these varying requirements while remaining as standard as possible. A one-size-fits-all approach was not feasible, as different facilities had different ventilation needs that required specific solutions.

Solution through acoustic booth fans

Together with this customer, we have developed 6 different types of casing that can be used for different air volumes. We have standardized models with different engine powers. Starting from 3 kW to 22 kW. The models are all available from stock. So that our customer can quickly serve their customer with a complete installation when they need the fan. The sound enclosures are fully assembled with us, including flexibles. When they are ready for departure, they are also tested. The cabinets are equipped with inspection panels, and an inlet and outlet side for the air.

Free-running plastic fan

Background

An incubator manufacturer asked us if we could equip their cabins with cleanable free-running plastic fans that would distribute the air equally throughout the cabin. Reliable, constant and optimal air conditions is essential for this customer.

Challenge

One of the critical requirements for any manufacturing process is ensuring consistent and reliable airflow. However, in some industries, such as food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing, maintaining high levels of hygiene is equally crucial. Any contamination, including bacteria, can cause significant disruptions to the entire production process, leading to delays, product recalls, and financial losses.

In such scenarios, having fans that are easy to clean becomes essential. Traditional fans with intricate designs and hard-to-reach areas can be a breeding ground for bacteria, making them unsuitable for such industries. Therefore, manufacturers need to come up with innovative solutions that not only provide constant airflow but are also easy to clean.

The challenge becomes even more significant when the solution needs to be cost-effective. Manufacturers must balance the cost of developing and manufacturing such fans with the needs of their customers, who also need to offer competitive prices to their consumers. Finding the right balance between cost, performance, and hygiene can be a challenging task.

Despite the challenges, manufacturers are continually working on new solutions that meet the specific requirements of their customers. These solutions can range from new materials that are easier to clean, to innovative designs that reduce the number of hard-to-reach areas, to advanced technologies that eliminate the need for manual cleaning altogether.

In conclusion, the challenge of creating a constant airflow that is also easy to clean and affordable is a significant issue in several industries. Meeting this challenge requires innovation, creativity, and a deep understanding of the needs of customers and the industry as a whole. Manufacturers who can strike the right balance will have a significant competitive advantage and help ensure the success of their customers.

Solution

In close cooperation with our customer, we have designed a concept that generates a constant airflow as well as guarantees hygiene. We have designed a very compact centrifugal fan so that not too much space was lost. The fan has a plastic impeller, plastic pressed cap and the motor plate and sides are anodized aluminum. The fan hood is easy to open so that it can be completely cleaned internally.

Tarmac recyling

Background

One of our customers was commissioned to design a processing plant for the recycling company in the south of the Netherlands. In this processing line, they would process tar-containing asphalt granulates in an environmentally friendly manner into usable sand and gravel. Together with our partner, we have offered a fan for the extraction system.

Challenge

The milled asphalt that is removed from the roads arrives at the factory and is dumped on a conveyor belt, the material is then dumped into a drum. Hot air is added to the drum, causing the sand and gravel to separate from the tar-containing asphalt, then it goes over hovering machines and the other dust-containing air is extracted via cyclones. Our fan is behind it. In this process, the temperatures in the drum can rise to 700 ° Celsius, so this air had to be extracted by our fan.

Solution

We are the only supplier in the Netherlands to offer a fan with the following features that emerged from the test report:

  • Operational operating point is 75,900 m³ / h at 294.3 mm H2O.
  • Theoretical operating point at maximum efficiency is 70,523 m³ / h at 319.4 mm H2O
  • Verification point is 77298 m³ / h at 274.3 mm H2O.
  • The intake of this fan is no less than 79.5kW with a maximum permitted power consumption of 82.1kW.
  • The fan is fully insulated to protect the motor from the extreme temperatures.

Stainless steel fan in the food industry

Background

Our customer develops machines for the food industry. In the food industry high demands are placed on the material properties of the parts and components.

Robust, corrosion-resistant and easy to clean materials are required, which do not change either the taste or the color of the products on contact with food. Corrosion-resistant stainless steel possesses these properties. Therefore, stainless steels such as 1.4401 or 1.4404 are widespread and popular materials in the food industry.

Challenge

A factory specialized in the development, production and marketing of high quality pet food for utility, sport and companion animals needed an extra production line for pet food.

In the production process, ingredients are mixed in mixers and cooked after which they are transported to a drying line to be cooled by air before they are packaged. In the past they used plastic drying fans with a standard steel coated motor. Because of the intensive cleaning cycles of the machines, the motors had to lead heavily and the lacquers started to come loose. These lacquers straightened out in the process and as a result they rejected the final product.

The customer was therefore urgently looking for a solution to this problem.

Solution

For this customer we have developed a fan completely made of stainless steel. So not only the fan housing,  bolts and nuts are in stainless steel. Also the motor is complete in stainless steel. A beautiful result that fully complies with today’s strict standards in the food industry.
