When welding stainless steel, not only welding fumes are released, but also warm air that would normally be lost. Instead of simply exhausting this heat, we developed a system that recovers and reuses the energy. This ensures a well-ventilated workspace without unnecessary heat loss. In addition, the installation was designed to be flexible — the extraction system for 17 workstations automatically adjusts to the number of active stations.

How does the system work?

In collaboration with Miltech, we installed a heat recovery system that includes:

✅ A Sult filter unit that efficiently captures welding fumes.
✅ An extraction fan that removes contaminated air.
✅ Two plug fans that blow clean air back into the workspace.
✅ A heat exchanger that uses the exhausted heat to preheat incoming air.
✅ Valves combined with a control system to maintain optimal balance between extraction and supply, regardless of how many workstations are in use.

What are the benefits?

Thanks to this system, approximately 16,000 m³/h of air is refreshed without significant energy loss. This ensures a healthy working environment and a lower energy bill. Additionally, the installation automatically adapts to the situation, so air is never extracted in excess of what is needed.

At Slingerland, we specialize in delivering high-quality, custom-made solutions for industrial applications. One of our recent projects involved providing a fully stainless steel fan, specifically designed to handle high temperatures of up to 350°C. This project was for a client who develops industrial machines for heating and pre-frying French fries.

To meet the extreme conditions, we designed a double-walled stainless steel fan. This structure includes a standard stainless steel housing, with 60 mm of thermal insulation added, and a second stainless steel housing welded around it. This construction ensures that the fan’s bearing block and motor are better protected from the high temperatures transported through the fan.

Due to the high temperatures, we deliberately avoided using a direct-drive fan, as it would significantly shorten the motor’s lifespan. Instead, we opted for a type 8 configuration, where a bearing block is placed between the motor and the stainless steel housing. This not only extends the lifespan of the fan but also reduces strain on the motor.

In consultation with the client, we chose stainless steel 316L for the motor mount, frame, and the entire fan housing. This was a critical choice, especially in the food industry, where stainless steel 316L is essential for its hygienic and corrosion-resistant properties. Additionally, the fan is equipped with a double-walled inspection hatch with thermal insulation to prevent heat loss.

For added efficiency and stability, the fan features heat-resistant stainless steel inlet and outlet flexible connections, as well as vibration dampers. This ensures vibration-free operation, even under extreme temperatures. The fan is powered by a 5.5kW 2-pole WEG motor, capable of moving 3800 m³/h of air at a pressure of 1356 pascal, even at 350°C.

Thanks to our expertise in stainless steel fans, our client was able to deliver a machine that meets the highest industrial standards. Slingerland is your partner for custom stainless steel fans designed to withstand the toughest conditions. Are you looking for a reliable solution for high-temperature applications? Contact Slingerland today for custom stainless steel fans tailored to your specific industrial needs.

Centrifugal fans and coulisse dampers for a drying process

One of our customers, a company specialising in development, construction and maintenance of thermal drying processes received a question from a customer of theirs from the wood industry. Wood chips and sawdust are a source of energy, provided they are sufficiently dried and packaged in a manageable manner. So our client was commissioned to develop a dryer suitable for drying wood chips and fibres sufficiently on a belt dryer. The moisture in the wood chips is reduced so that it can be packed and transported better. This dryer was to be heated using a biofuel-fired furnace.

Input moisture concentration of the material was 55% and output moisture concentration only 12%. The dryer has a capacity of 7500 kg per hour.

Solution through 3 centrifugal fans and coulisse dampeners

Therefore, to carry out this drying process efficiently, sufficient air is needed to dry the material efficiently. It was decided to manufacture the heavy-duty centrifugal fans entirely from steel. Due to the high relative humidity in the medium, the choice was made to apply a high-quality customer-specific coating system suitable for this medium.

In this project, a low noise level was desired for the house radiation and appearance in the press side. To achieve this, centrifugal fans with a low 6-pole speed and adapted material thicknesses were chosen. To reduce the noise level in the press side, coulisse dampers, manufactured entirely from stainless steel 304, were chosen.

Plastic centrifugal fan with stainless steel fan and swing-out option

The customer is a large industrial bakery that produces a wide range of bakery products and needs efficient extraction to ensure the high quality of the final product. At this facility, they make various types of pastry bottoms from yeast doughs and sand doughs. They then offer these both unfilled, semi-filled and fully filled, from unfilled tartelet to ready-made flan.

Fan for extraction of air production lines

The customer was looking for a new solution for the extraction of one of their production lines. In this line, it was important to have sufficient extraction, allowing them to extract unnecessary dust and control the high humidity. This would allow them to improve the quality and shelf life of their finished product.

Solution with plastic centrifugal fan P354

We worked with our client to advise the end user to take a plastic centrifugal fan P354, including a plastic impeller and motor mount equipped with a swing-out option to allow proper cleaning of the fan at the end of the day.

The fan was equipped with a WEG motor of 0.55 kW B5 design. The fan’s PP impeller and PE housing made it corrosion resistant and suitable for use in humid environments. To address the problem of condensate build-up, the fan was equipped with a condensate drainage system that prevented moisture build-up and ensured that the system remained dry even after cleaning.

The fan’s frequency control allowed precise control of fan speed, which not only contributed to energy savings, but also allowed the customer to adjust the airflow to their specific requirements. To ensure the fan’s durability and ease of maintenance, we added additional components, including a motor foundation with a swing-out system made of stainless steel304, a stainless steel304 mesh grille on the discharge side, a flexible connection for the suction side, an ABB operating switch and 4 vibration dampers.

We would love to see what we can do for your business with a plastic centrifugal fan!
