PP Centrifugal Fans for Leiden University Medical Centre

Our PP centrifugal fans recently proved to be the perfect solution for a major Dutch installer who had been tasked with replacing fans at a hospital. It was extremely important for these fans to be 100% airtight, as not a single particle can be allowed to escape from a sensitive environment of this nature. Read on to find out how we tackled this problem at Slingerland!

Plastic centrifugal fans for a university medical centre

Slingerland’s plastic centrifugal fans recently proved to be the missing piece in the puzzle at LUMC, or Leiden University Medical Centre. This is because this research institute hosts several laboratories, at which valuable and special research is performed. To be able to carry out this research in the best possible conditions, a reliable and high-quality extraction system was required. And that’s exactly what we were able to offer!

PP centrifugal fans with bypass flow for 100% airtightness

One of the laboratories at the Leiden institute was due a new set of fans. In answer to their question, we supplied six RMV250 2D PP-welded plastic fans, as well as one RMV225 welded fan for external installation.

This plastic RMV250 centrifugal fan can handle an extraction rate of 400 m³/h at 600 pascal of negative pressure, plus a rate of 1500 m³/h at 1300 pascal of negative pressure at a second operating point. These industrial centrifugal fans are also fitted with 2.2 kW ABB electric motors. The shaft seals are fitted with a plastic seal with an extra chamber for negative pressure. This negative pressure is created via a bypass to the inlet of the fan.

These robust pp centrifugal fans come fully welded and are extremely solidly built as a result. The customer used this solution to replace the existing fans in the technical room at the hospital and is now set for many years to come. That’s why we do what we do!

Plastic fans extract fumes at plastic bottle recycling plant

Opting for the right plastic centrifugal fan can make all the difference to your plant’s operations. And that’s why one of our customers – the maintenance provider of a leading plastic (polyethylene) bottle recycling plant in the Netherlands that processes up to 75,000 tonnes a year – recently approached us with an extraction-related challenge. The company is responsible for cleaning and recycling plastic bottles. However, due to the rigorous nature of cleaning these products require, this type of process usually leaches a significant amount of caustic, sodium hydroxide fumes. Naturally, a solution had to be found.

Looking to prevent damage by efficiently extracting caustic fumes? Discover our plastic fans

Acids and bases have what is known as a corrosive effect, i.e. they damage material surfaces. That’s why acids and bases are also frequently used to clean dirt from surfaces. In this case, they are used to clean old plastic bottles. The plastic from these bottles, after it’s been cleaned and shredded, is intended for reuse in the production of food packaging.

The advantage to sodium hydroxide (also known as lye or caustic soda) is that it’s extremely thorough; plastic bottles cleaned with it can be reused worry-free. Aside from cleaning plastic, though, it also leached fumes into the air, damaging the nearby washing lines in the process. Consequently, it didn’t take long before internal damage to various materials and objects at the plant was discovered.

Plastic centrifugal fans for the chemical industry – a perfect solution

Working with our customer, we decided to install plastic centrifugal fans for sodium hydroxide fumes in the plant. These welded fans, especially designed for the chemical industry, are completely chemical resistant. In total, we’ve supplied six different types, with two of the series’ largest featuring in the pictures.

These PP welded fans are two 900 mm RMVs, equipped with 6-pole 11 kW motors. Before delivery, we installed the plastic fans in an acoustic enclosure, equipped with flexible connections, so that the customer could easily install them on site. The overall dimensions of this acoustic enclosure were 2500 mm long, 1500 mm wide and 2500 mm high. Lastly, all centrifugal fans were equipped with a PP impeller, HDPE housing, and stainless steel mounting materials.

Plastic fan - CO2 dosing system

Background

A customer in greenhouse horticulture guarantees products with a long lifespan and high reliability. That is why it was their job to find a high-quality solution for the correct dosing of CO2 in the greenhouses. The ventilation systems they supply must be reliable, robust and solid.

Challenge

We had to come up with a concept that is high-quality, interesting from a price point of view, but can also guarantee a long lifetime. Of course, this combination of product requirements is not always easy to combine in a product. The desired fan had to be suitable for bringing CO2 from flue gases from a combustion boiler or CHP installation into a cultivation area. So that the growth of plants is promoted.

Solution through our plastic fan

We have developed a fan for this customer, partly made of plastic and stainless steel. The fan is built on a high-quality stainless steel frame, which consists of a motor support and rear plate to mount the stainless steel impeller on. Then the plastic welded house is built around it. A stainless steel impeller was chosen because sometimes temperatures up to 60 degrees can be reached. Stainless steel is better suited in this application to ensure that there is no imbalance in the impeller.

Free-running plastic fan

Background

An incubator manufacturer asked us if we could equip their cabins with cleanable free-running plastic fans that would distribute the air equally throughout the cabin. Reliable, constant and optimal air conditions is essential for this customer.

Challenge

One of the critical requirements for any manufacturing process is ensuring consistent and reliable airflow. However, in some industries, such as food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing, maintaining high levels of hygiene is equally crucial. Any contamination, including bacteria, can cause significant disruptions to the entire production process, leading to delays, product recalls, and financial losses.

In such scenarios, having fans that are easy to clean becomes essential. Traditional fans with intricate designs and hard-to-reach areas can be a breeding ground for bacteria, making them unsuitable for such industries. Therefore, manufacturers need to come up with innovative solutions that not only provide constant airflow but are also easy to clean.

The challenge becomes even more significant when the solution needs to be cost-effective. Manufacturers must balance the cost of developing and manufacturing such fans with the needs of their customers, who also need to offer competitive prices to their consumers. Finding the right balance between cost, performance, and hygiene can be a challenging task.

Despite the challenges, manufacturers are continually working on new solutions that meet the specific requirements of their customers. These solutions can range from new materials that are easier to clean, to innovative designs that reduce the number of hard-to-reach areas, to advanced technologies that eliminate the need for manual cleaning altogether.

In conclusion, the challenge of creating a constant airflow that is also easy to clean and affordable is a significant issue in several industries. Meeting this challenge requires innovation, creativity, and a deep understanding of the needs of customers and the industry as a whole. Manufacturers who can strike the right balance will have a significant competitive advantage and help ensure the success of their customers.

Solution

In close cooperation with our customer, we have designed a concept that generates a constant airflow as well as guarantees hygiene. We have designed a very compact centrifugal fan so that not too much space was lost. The fan has a plastic impeller, plastic pressed cap and the motor plate and sides are anodized aluminum. The fan hood is easy to open so that it can be completely cleaned internally.
